On Thursday 13th June 2013, the conference “Recognising Latin Americans in the UK” was held at the Argentine Embassy. The event was co-organised by the Argentine Consulate, the Latin American Recognition Campaign (LARC), and the Coalition of Latin Americans in the United Kingdom (CLAUK), with the aim of advancing in the process of recognition of Latin Americans as an ethnic minority in London and the UK.
The event was opened with the welcome speeches of her excellency Alicia Castro, the Argentine Ambassador, and Mr Claudio Rojo, Minister Argentine Consul. The two panel of speakers included Jeremy Corbyn, MP for Islington North; Catherine McDonald, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Equalities; Cathy McIlwaine, Professor of Geography at Queen Mary University and author of the No Longer Invisible report; Mubin Haq, Director of Policy and Grants, Trust for London; Gladys Medina, Coordinator of LARC; and Lucila Granada, Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator of CLAUK. The two panels were chaired by Carolina Gottardo, Director of LAWRS and Mabel Encinas, Sub-Coordinator of LARC. You can read the Argentine Embassy’s press release here.
